The research in this chart was the result of a rather lengthy red-herring chase. I was initially led to believe by some researchers that Richard Bilton, born c.1823, who emigrated to NSW, Australia, was a member of the Leconfield & Hessle Bilton's. Subsequent research has shown that this was the wrong Richard and the Richard Bilton of interest came from the area of Malton in North Yorkshire (and prior to that from Easingwold, North Yorkshire). Rather than having all the East Yorkshire research go to waste, I have combined the East Yorkshire charts into one file and present that research here. Please note that apart from errors, I am no longer updating this chart.

The Bilton's of East Yorkshire are concentrated in the South-Eastern corner of the East Riding, around the city of Kingston-on-Hull. The name no doubt arises from the village of Bilton, located just to the east of the modern day city limit of Kingston-on-Hull. There are no Bilton's in the Bilton parish records for 1726-1871. Prior to 1700 there are three main concentration's of Bilton's in the available PR transcripts, Leconfield (a few km north of Beverley), Brandesburton (midway between Beverley & Hornsea, on the coast) and Patrington (far south-east). To a large extent this is because most available PR transcriptions only date back to the early 1700's. There are, however, a sizable number of PR's available back to the 1500's, all but the above three have only scattered references to Bilton's.

Biltons of Leconfield, Hessle & Beyond (East Riding, Co Yorkshire, England)

Richard, William & Thomas are almost certainly siblings (or possibly cousins). They are contemparies and have common forenames amongst their descendents (all have a Leonard Bilton within one or two generations, for instance). There are a number of gaps in the Leconfield PR's between 1600-1700, as evidenced below. There were also two William Bilton's who married in 1620. Since the Leconfield PR's do not include the mother's name at this time, it is impossible to be certain which children belong to which William. To further complicate matters, there is no surviving baptism record for either William in Leconfield.

Leconfield today is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, just under 5km north west of the Beverley town centre. The civil parish is formed by the villages of Leconfield and Arram and the hamlet of Scorborough. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 1,990. It is home to a RAF base. Leconfield castle was the home of the Percy family, the Dukes of Northumberland. There are extensive Tudor brick remains on the visible mound and the 'moat' also remains.[Wikipedia] From various 19th Century Gazetteers: "Leconfield (also spelt Leckonfield). The Church is a vicarage, dedicated to Saint Catharine, but sometimes referred to as All Saints. It is a plain building with an ivy-mantled brick tower, containing two bells. It underwent some repairs in 1684, and the interior was restored about 1866. Addi, a noble Saxon thane, who lived about the beginning of the seventh century, built a chapel [at what is now Leconfield] for the use of the early Christians. At the time of the Domesday Survey, Lachinfield, as the name is therein written, was held by the Earl of Moreton, William de Percy, and the canons of Beverley, under the Archbishop of York. The Percys subsequently appear as lords of Leconfield, and had a residence here. In 1308, Henry de Percy obtained a license to fortify his castle at Leconfield. During the time of the 5th earl, the family at Leconfield consisted of 166 persons, and, on an average, 55 strangers were entertained every day, making a total of 221. The annual consumption of food was 250 quarters of malt, 12 quarters of wheat, 647 sheep, 131 beeves, 25 hogs, 28 calves, and 40 lambs; and 10 tuns and 2 hogsheads of Gascony wine! At this place, was once a celebrated mansion of the ancient Earls of Northumberland, but of this, not a vestige now remains. According to an early description of the residence in 1538, 'Leckinfield is a large house, and stondish within a great mote, yn one very spacious courte; 3 parts of the house, saving the meane gate that is made of bricke, is al of tymbre. The fore parte is fair, made of stone, and sum bricke. The Park thereby is very fair and large, and meatly welle woddid. Ther is a fair tour of bricke, for a logge yn the Park.' The castle stood a little west of the village, and was surrounded by a wide and deep moat, the remains of which are still to be seen. In 1541, the Earl entertained Henry VIII, his new queen, Catharine Howard, and their train at Leconfield Castle here. The Earl's second son, Sir Thomas Percy, was beheaded for his participation in the Pilgrimage of Grace and part of the estates were conferred upon John Dudley, who was created Earl of Northumberland, and succeeded to the castle and estate of Leconfield, in 1551. On the accession of Queen Mary, Dudley, who had with others conspired against that princess, to place his own daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey, upon the throne, was tried and executed for his treason, and the Northumberland honours and estates were restored to Thomas Percy, the seventh earl. Percy, for conspiring against Queen Elizabeth, was beheaded at York in 1572. The next earl, Henry Percy, his brother, was suspected of favouring the claims of Mary Queen of Scots, and was committed to the Tower, where he died. He was succeeded by Henry, his eldest son, in whose time the castle of Leconfield fell to decay. He was accused by his enemies of complicity in the Gunpowder Plot, was sentenced by the Star Chamber to a fine of £30,000, and was confined a prisoner in the tower for many years. This fine so impoverished him, that Leconfield and his other Yorkshire castles were unoccupied, and went to ruin. Shortly afterwards, the buildings at Leconfield were totally demolished (in 1600) to supply materials for the repair of Wressil Castle. {With such bad luck in their fates, it is perhaps no surprise Leconfield Castle was abandoned. Surely it was considered cursed!} In 1892 the parish comprised 3,629 acres (including 28 acres of water) with crops of wheat, oats, barley, beans, and turnips, and on the carrs rape and mangold are largely grown and a population of 302. About one-fourth of the land is laid down in pasture.[GenUKI] Arram is a hamlet of scattered houses about 2km east of Leconfield, with evidence of habitation back to at least Roman times.[ERArch.Soc]

The parish of Kilnwick on the Wolds comprises the townships of Kilnwick and Bracken, and part of the township of Lockington. It covers 1,698 acres and is situated at the foot of the Wolds. The soil is clay and peat, the subsoil gravel, clay, and chalk; and the chief crops are wheat, oats, and barley. The population in 1891 was 239. Chalk stone is quarried for building and agricultural purposes. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice, restored at various times and in different styles of architecture. It consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, north porch, and western tower containing three bells. The tower, rebuilt of brick about the end of the 17th century, is mantled with ivy. The chancel and nave were restored in 1871. The church has a Norman doorway.[GenUKI]

In 1892 the parish of Scorborough consisted of a single township, an area of 1,384 acres. The surface is generally level, and forms excellent grazing land for fattening stock. The other crops were wheat, oats, barley, and beans. The population in 1891 was 82. The village is small but picturesquely seated in the valley of the Aike beck. In the early part of the Saxon period the area belonged to Earl Addi, who erected a chapel there, which afterwards became the parish church. In Domesday Book the name is written Scogerbuth, suggesting it was colonised by a Norseman, who erected his buth (booth or hut) in the Skogr or wood. Subsequently the place came into the possession of the Hothams who erected a castle there. The manor was destroyed during the civil war. The present day manor was built after the war. The church of St Leonard was rebuilt and consecrated in 1859.[GenUKI]

Hessle (or Hessle by Hull) is a town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, just to the west of Kingston-Upon-Hull. Originally a discrete town, it is now part of Hull's built-up area but not technically within the city's boundaries. The total area of the parish is 2,695 acres. In 1821 the population was 1,021, in 1831 it was 1,538, in 1891 it was 2,892. Hessle may have been a Viking Settlement, though the Manor of "Haisell" is recorded in the Domesday Book as having been given by William the Conqueror to Drogo Debeverer, Lord of Holderness. The next owners were the Stuteville family, Lords of Cottingham, from whom it passed by marriage to Hugh Le Wake in the reign of Henry III, from there it passed to the Holland Earls of Kent. Eventually the Sykes family became Lord of the Manor. The township of Hessle, near the Humber-side, dates from Anglo-Saxon times. The original settlement grew up between the woods that were later ‘called Hesslewood and the salt marshes which then stretched eastward to the river Hull. The Anglians named it “Hoesellea,” i.e., the hazel grove or meadow; the Normans called it Hase. The Parish of Hessle in medieval times comprised the township proper and the lands between Hessle creek and the river Hull. The site on the Hull, purchased by Edward I in 1293, became Kingston upon Hull. Hessle village in its current form developed in the area created by the enclosure of the three open fields in 1792-1796. Further development took place in the 19th century due to the arrival of the railroad in 1840 and the abolition of turnpikes in 1873 (the route from the ferry to the village was a turnpike, charging a toll to those who passed, as were the road to Hull and Beverley). The centre of Hessle is called "Hessle Square" or "The Square" for short. Hessle All Saints Church is located just off the Square. Chalk-quarrying was a major industry at Hessle (at Hessle Cliff), continuing into the 20th century. In more modern times, it has been a centre for shipbuilding. The church is built of stone and consists of a chancel, with an aisle on each side, nave, with north and south aisles, north and south porches, and a west embattled tower, surmounted by an octagonal spire, containing a clock and a chime of four bells. The Saxon or Norman church that had previously occupied the site, was replaced by the present Early English building in the early part of the 13th century, although this has been restored and altered several times. The original church consisted simply of a nave and chancel without aisles, and possibly a western tower. It is possible that some parts of this original building remain and many of its stones were reused in the newer building. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, the fabric of the church had been so neglected that rebuilding had become essential. By 1868 we are told the nave walls had become a patchwork “partly of chalk (from the parish pits) of rubble-stones and mud.” In 1870 the chancel was taken down and re-erected 26 feet further east and the north and south aisle walls were also taken down and rebuilt, expanding the interior. The church was given to the prior and convent of Guisborough soon after the foundation of that house, and it was subsequently appropriated to the same monastery, the prior appointing one of his own canons as vicar. The parish was then of greater extent and included Hull, where there was a chapel-of-ease dedicated to the Holy Trinity. This chapel was subordinate to the mother church of Hessle till the year 1661, when it was made independently parochial. Middleton on the Wolds is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The village is pleasantly situated in a valley, about nine miles north-west of Beverley. Middleton is a long narrow parish extending from east to west 5¼ miles, and having an average breadth of 1¼ miles. It is bounded on the north by the parishes of Bainton, North Dalton, and Warter; on the west by Londesborough; on the south by Lund; and on the east by Kilnwick-on-the-Wolds. It covers 3,664 acres and it had in 1891, a population of 678. The village remains small, with a population of 774 in 2001. The village dates back to at least Saxon times - the name Middleton is derived from the Saxon words meaning middle farmstead. Called Middeltun in the Domesday Book of 1086, the Church of St Andrew, built on rising ground, dominates the eastern end of the village. The village pond and wells would have ensured there was a good supply of water in the days before this vital commodity came on tap. Near the pond a block of single-storey early 18th century chalkstone cottages (now forming a single house called Quackers) remain as an important reminder of Middleton’s agrarian past. In the centuries that followed the Norman Conquest, farming remained the mainstay of the local economy, with 21 farmers named in a directory of 1823 and a population of 441. In the 1800's chalkstone was quarried in several places, and burnt into lime for agricultural purposes. The manor, with a large portion of the land, formerly belonged to the Boyles, Earls of Burlington, from whom it passed, by the marriage of the heiress, to the Duke of Devonshire. The church of St. Andrew is built of stone in the latter part of the Norman era, on the site of one mentioned in Domesday Book. It consists of a chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and western tower containing five bells. The chancel, which is unusually long, was erected about the year 1280, and the nave about 1360. The church underwent a thorough restoration in 1873. The tower, which had been erected in 1830, in lieu of a small octagonal turret with dwarfed spire added in the previous century, was rebuilt. At the western extremity of the parish is the winning post of the Kipling Cotes racecourse, which is said to be the oldest course in England. In 1618, five noblemen, at the head of whom was Lord Burlington, 19 Baronets, and 25 gentlemen of the county subscribed £360 to the establishment of annual horse races. North Dalton is a pretty village on the slopes of the Yorkshire Wolds between Pocklington and Driffield. The parish covers 4,635 acres. In 1881 the population was 489 and in 1891 it was 520. In the 1800's the parish was essentially agrarian and the chief crops were wheat, oats, barley, and turnips. The village is large and well built, situated in a deep valley in the Wolds. In the centre is a large pond. The church stands on an eminence near the centre of the village and the dedication is to All Saints. The building dates from the Norman era, and the present structure retains intact some of the work of its Norman builders. It consists of chancel, nave, and a low western tower with battlements. The tower is of later date, and the chancel shows a restoration in the Early English period.[GenUKI]

Beverley is one of the most largest towns in the East riding. Beverley was originally called Deir Wold, or the Wood of the Deirans (the pre-Saxon name for Yorkshire); and subsequently Beverlac, the place or lake of Beavers, an animal then abounding in the neighbourhood, from the Anglo-Saxon "Beoferlic" or "Beaver Clearing in the Woods". Beverley's main church, the Minster, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is one of the oldest in England, possibly dating back to as early as 126AD. It was destroyed in the Anglo-Saxon invasions but was rebuilt by St John of Beverley, the fifth archbishop of York, in 704AD. It was destroyed again in 860 by the Danes and rebuilt by Athelstan, king of England three years later. In the mean time a town grew up around the church, which became known as Beverlac. Destroyed again in 1188 by the Vikings, construction of the present Minster began in 1220. The reformation of the church had a considerable impact on the town in terms of a loss of economy and during the Civil War, Charles I placed his headquarters in Beverley as he repeatedly attempted siege on Hull. In 1665 the plague arrived claiming many local lives. In the eighteenth century the town became prosperous once more and the Minster, which was in a ruinous state, was restored.[GenUKI, TownCouncil]

Holpton a parish in the south-east of the East Riding, about 4 miles east of Patrington. It is situated near the coast of the North Sea, and is in the 1800's wholly agricultural. There is significant erosion of the shoreline, which continues today and in the first 50 years of the 1800's saw the shoreline recede by some 70 yards. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is a small structure, with a tower of more recent erection containing one bell.[GenUKI]

Hollym has been spelt in several ways over the centuries, starting with Holam in the Doomsday Book, and then Holoyme, Holeym and Halym, all of which derived from the Saxon for 'homestead near the hollow'. It is about three miles north-east of Patrington and two miles from Withernsea. It lies on very fertile boulder clay with red clay subsoil, averaging 7m above sea level but ranging from 15m above to 7m below sea level. Hollym, like many places in Holderness, is a long, scattered village with parallel streets, Northside Road and Southside Road (now South Carr Dales Road) extending on either side of fields enclosed in the last century. The old farmsteads all had their garths extending north and south towards these roads which have Vicar Lane, Church Lane, Gilliescliffe Lane (now the main road) and Manor Lane as linked cross streets. Hollym today has about 400 residents. In 1891 the population was 235. What was once a farming community has now become a commuter village for Hull & Withernsea. The parish church was originally a Chapel of Ease and called St. Catherines but this was later changed to St. Nicholas. St Nicholas recieved a license to hold services in 1409. The present church is the third on the site, built 1884, but incorporating the tower from the previous building, erected in 1814 (demolished because of unsafe foundations). The Holderness coast near Hollym is the most rapidly eroding coastline in Europe, erosion of more than a metre per year is not unusual.[Hollym, PloughInn]

Skeffling is in the south-east of the East Riding, about 4 miles south-east of Patrington and 3 miles from the sea-coast. The village is situated at the mouth of the river Humber. The parish covers 1,834 acres and the population in 1891 was 139. The Church of St Helen, a stone structure consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing two bells, dates from the 15th century. The original church stood in another place, and was rebuilt on its present site in 1466. St Helen's remainds largely as it was in 1466 when construction was complete; with no electricity, services still held by candle light. Birstall or Burstall Priory was sited in the parish, dating to 1219. It stood near the Humber, but the site has been swept away by the encroachments of the river.[GenUKI]

Cottingham is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is midway between the city of Kingston Upon Hull and Beverley. The name Cottingham derives from 'Homestead of Cotta's people', Cotta being the name of an Anglo-Saxon tribal chief from the mid 5th century. Cotta is derived from Ket, the female deity of the Ancient Britons, which itself comes from the Celtic word Coed which means 'a wood'. Late Bronze Age artifacts have been found in the village confirming settlement by the Beaker people. The town was listed as Cotting in the Domesday Book. The population in 1801 was 1,927, in 1901 it was 3,751 & in 1991 it was 16,067. The 'Manor' of Cottingham, which existed until the early 19th century, was fairly large, 36 square miles in all. This is probably where Cottingham got it's reputation for being the largest village in England. The parish church, dedicated to St. Mary, the Virgin, stands at the top of Hallgate in the midst of the village of Cottingham. The first reference to the parish was in 1160. There is no trace of the 1160 church left and the Nave of the present church dates from 1316. Construction was completed in 1416. Around 1771 the churchwardens of St Mary’s allocated land to the east of the village to poor families of Cottingham. The settlement was originally known as 'Paupers’ Gardens', located between Endyke and Middledyke lanes. Cottingham today consists of two Victorian high streets, Hallgate and King Street. Watton is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, about 10 km north of Beverley, covering around 4,740 acres. In 1892 the population was 311. In 2001 the parish had a population of 238. A large portion of the parish was anciently marsh land, and hence was called Wetadun, or Wet town. Listed as Wattune in the Domesday Book, the previous Saxon lords were dispossessed. Home to a Gilbertine double monastery founded in 1148 by Eustace Fitzjohn on the site of a more ancient priory, which existed as early as 686, but very little of the history of the earlier convent is known. It is likely that the original convent shared in the destruction which overtook Beverley Minster and many other religious houses in Yorkshire when the Danes ravaged the north in 866. Watton Abbey was dissolved in 1539 by Henry VIII. The Nun of Watton is noted for her pregnancy while in the Priory. The present Elizabethan structure was erected partially out of the ruins of the priory. Very little of the convent now remain above ground. The priory buildings were surrounded by a moat, enclosing 20 acres of land and was broad and deep enough to be navigable for a small boat. The church is dedicated to St. Mary, an ancient building dating to 1100AD, built of brick & consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a low western tower. Restored in 1888.[GenUKI, Wikipedia]

In the mid 1700's Sculcoates has a population of less than 100. By the 1820's it was home to 10,449 residents and 27,167 in 1861. Sculcoates is actually older than Hull, being mentioned in Domesday book as one of the lordships of Ralph de Mortimer, who accompanied William the Conqueror from Normandy, and was lord of several manors in the area. The church is in the old village, and was rebuilt in 1760; it is dedicated to St. Mary.[GenUKI]

The Brandesburton PR's are continuous from 1558 to the 1840's. The following Bilton family appears in the PR's from the earliest years but suddenly vanishes just after 1700. Most likely the family emigrated en mass, possibly to the America's. Another Bilton family appears in Brandesburton in the 1720's, however there is no obvious connection and they have likely moved to Brandesburton from another parish. The earlier family vanishes before neighbouring PR transcripts begin, so it is not possible to tell whether any of this family moved to a neighbouring parish, tho' it is likely.

The IGI lists 12 John Bilton's born between 1814-1818, too many to determine which matches the following John. I have included this family as an addendum to that of Ralph Johnson Bilton since John, below, had a son also named Ralph Johnson Bilton. It may be coincidence, however Ralph itself is an extremely rare Bilton forename in East Yorkshire, and to combine it with the same middle name strongly suggests a connection. Was John a nephew of the older Ralph Johnson Bilton?

The Cherry Burton Bilton's are almost certainly descended from the Leconfield Bilton's given the close proximity of the two villages. The Cherry Burton PR's date back to 1597, however there are no earlier references to Bilton's prior to the early 1700's with the appearance of John and the marriage of an Elizabeth Bilton, possibly from Leconfield, to Matthew Motte, in 22/12/1709. John may be the John Bilton, s/o John Bilton & Mary Skipwith, who married in Leconfield in 1607 & had several children in the early to mid 1710's and then vanishes from Leconfield.

Available parish records for Beverley begin in 1713 for baptisms and 1718 for marriages. Consequently it is impossible to tell whether Samuel was a native of Beverley or moved there from elsewhere. The name Samuel is very rare amongst the earlier Leconfield Bilton's so there is likely no connection between the two families, at least for several generations prior to Samuel. The only record for the baptism of a Samuel Bilton between 1660-1700 is that of a son of a Henry Bilton, baptised 1679, York. Since York is a considerable distance away and Henry is unknown in the Beverley family, this is doubtful.

The Wawne PR's date back to the early 1700's. Since the Bilton's first appear in the 1770's, John evidently came from elsewhere. There are no earlier David Bilton's in east Yorkshire, suggesting that rare Bilton forename came from his mother's family. There are, however, several other John's born in the right time frame within 10km of Wawne. Wawne is about 6km south-east of Beverley.

Of these, the 4 sons of William Bilton's would seem the most likely candidates since the Edward, Francis & Thomas do not appear within the next two generations. John of Hessle is otherwise accounted for. Note however that Thomas Bilton & Elizabeth Day, of Beverley, were married in Wawne. John born c.1741, Hull, was an older brother of the John born c.1750, so presumably died in infancy. That leaves the two John's baptised 1750, which is a bit on the young side, tho' not impossible. Of course, John of Wawne may have been baptised in a parish for which the PR's have not been indexed in the IGI or have not been indexed prior to 1750 or his baptism lies in one of the gaps that afflict all parish registrars, be it due to damage from fire or water, loss of one of the PR volumes for the parish in question etc.

William appears in Beverley a few years after Samuel, however there appears no connection between the two families - Phillip, a common name in William's family, does not appear in Samuel's family whilst Samuel does not appear in William's family. John & William were contemporaries in Kirk Ella and were likely siblings (or cousins). After the marriage (presumed) of one of William's grandchildren, there is no further trace of this family. They do not appear to be connected with any of the other Bilton families of either Kirk Ella or Beverley. Kirk Ella PR's date back to the mid 1500, so John & William are presumably from elsewhere or the PR's are very incomplete (simply because the PR exists back to the mid 1500's does not mean the coverage is complete).

William does move to Beverley, which is within 6km of Scorborough & Leconfield, which suggests a possible connection, however note the IGI PR's for Kingston-Upon-Hull, which at the time was only a few km's away, only date back to the early 1700's so it is quite feasable for William & John to have come from there.
