Built before 1900. Located at 15 Bayfield Rd, Greystanes.
A largely intact, albiet extensively modified, example of a late
Victorian suburban cottage. The original weatherboard cladding has been
replaced by aluminium siding.
The dwelling has a single steeply pitched hipped roof of corrugated
iron, continuing at lower pitch to original encircling verandah, which
has been infilled to three sides. There is no chimney remaining. Front
verandah is supported by squat timber posts on rendered masonry piers
and has decorative timber valance, which both appear non-original,
dating from the early 20th century. The verandah has a fibro ceiling
and timber floor boards, both non-original.
The site is part of a 700 acres grant to Charles Whalan in 1818. In
1893 John Booth purchased over 300 acres of land including part of the
Whalan "Macquarie Park" Estate. In 1897 the land was transferred, and
by 1904 by virtue of foreclosure of the mortgage on the former Booth
estate, it was subdivided and sold. Charles Ernest Byrnes, a prominent
Parramatta citizen, purchased several lots including this one in 1911.
At the time the property consisted of over two acres. By 1975 it had
been subdivided several times and had reached its present size.
