PAGE (line 2) ------------- A genealogy of the PAGE family of County Cambridgeshire, England, from c.1560 to about 1750 and concentrating on my direct line. Note: This Page line ends with Mary Page who married William Oake in 1704. William and Mary's daughter, Anne, married John Turner and their daughter, Ann, married John Starling, parents of Robert Starling who married Sarah page, 1812, from my other Page line. To my knowledge the two Page lines are not directly connected (other than by commmon intermarriages with other surnames such as Starling, above). I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 2/1/2003 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. Page's are fairly common in Cambridgeshire. Prior to 1700, the surname was mainly concentrated in a few areas in southern Cambridgeshire. 14 miles due west of Cambridge there was Croxton (1540+), Hardwick (1575+), 6 miles due west, Willingham by St Ives (1560+), 8 miles to the north-west and the villages of Shepworth and Melbourn (1569+), which lie about 9 miles south-west of Cambridge. Virtually all Page's in the south-west of Cambridgeshire can be traced to one of these source points, as too Pages that appear in Cambridge itself during the mid to late 1600's. In addition to this south-west region there are two other areas in which Page's are common before 1700. They occur in the Soham area (1549+), some 12 miles to the north-west of Cambridge, north of Newmarket, which lies in the enclave of Suffolk. There is some spread to neighbouring villages, but these Page's do not last past the mid 1600's. The other area of Page's stretches in an arc along the south-eastern border of Cambridgeshire, from Cheveley in the north to Linton in the south. Early instances of Page's in this arc, from north to south, include: Cheveley (1560), Westley Waterless (1576), Balsham (1570) and Linton (1561). Because of their locations, the Balsham and Linton Page's are likely connected, as too as the former two areas. By 1700 Page's could be found in most villages between Linton and Cheveley. In the case of Linton, Balsham and Cheveley, there is only a single family in the earliest records, while for Westley Waterless there appear to have been three siblings. ************************************************* 13.
