Numbering begins anew with each section. Kingsland is a suburb of London, now marked by a subway station, in the east of the district of Islington and just north of the city centre. Hackney is the district to the immediate east of Islington. "Rose Cottage" was the name of the Tosh residence and was located at 269 Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush, which is in the east of the district of Hammersmith, just west of Kensington Gardens. During the 1800's it was in the county of Middlesex. Turnmill St is in Clerkenwell-Holborn, in the south-western corner of the Islington registration district. 6. John Bent (Bentley?) King, born c.1780, possibly in London.[1,4] Married Mary Ann Marshall, c.1803, probably London.[4] Mary Ann was born c.1780, daughter of Richard.[4] Children of John Bent King and Mary Ann Marshall: i. John William King, was born c.1818, Christchurch, Spilla Fields, Middlesex (now London),[12] and baptised 18/7/1817, Ealing, Brentford, Middlesex (now London).[11] Occupation listed as salesman (1837),[1] meat salesman (1851),[12] and a provisions merchant (1861).[13] In 1851 and 1861 John and his family resided at Runneymede Cottages, No.2 De Beauvoir Road, Tower Hamlets (West Hackney).[12,13] This road stretches north-south through the suburbs of De Beauvoir and Kingsland (the latter to the north), consistent with the place of death given in the family bible.[2] Died Jan-Mar Quarter,[15] 1869,[2,3,15] Kingsland, London.[2,3] Death was registered in the St Luke (Holborn) district.[15] Probably at the family residence, 2 De Beauvoir Road, Kingsland, London.[12,13] Married Elizabeth Back, 12/11/1837 at Christ Church, Greyfriars Newgate, City of London, London.[1,2,4,5] Elizabeth was born 8/1/1819 and baptised 8/2/1819 in Folkstone, Kent, England. [2,6,12,13] Possibly the Elizabeth King who's death was registered in the June quarter, 1869, Hackney (50yo).[16] {No other obvious matches listed in FreeBDM for Middlesex/London to 1900}. According to the marriage certificate, the wedding occured at the parish church of the United Parishes of Christ Church and St Leonard Foster in the City of London.[1] The family bible appears to place the church on Neringate Street, however the entry is ambigious.[2] At the time of the marriage, Elizabeth was living at 118 Newgate St, London and John, a minor at the time, was living at 24 Turnmill St, London.[1] Living with the family in 1851 was a servant, Mary Ann Rose (22yo).[12] The family had two domestic servants in 1861, Catherine Francis (26yo) and Hannah Howe (24yo).[13] Children of John King and Elizabeth Back: i. John William King,[2] Junior, born 1840, Clerkenwell, London,[12,13,20] birth registered in the quarter ending 3/1841, Clerkenwell, London.[19] Living with parents, 1851 & 1861, in the latter census listed as being employed assisting his father.[12,13] In 1881 was residing at Amersham V, Queens Rd, Kingston On Thames, Surrey.[20] His occupation at the time was given as a commerical clerk.[20] Living with John and his family were two servants, Elizabeth Hobbo (1859) and Rosa Clements (1867).[20] Married Emily B., born 1855, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.[20] children of John & Emily King: a. Clara Maria King, born 18/12/1841,[2,10,12,13] Shoreditch, London.[7,12,17] Birth registered, Shoreditch, quarter ending 3/1842.[7,17] According to the Eastes bible, Clara was born in 1844,[2] the Tosh bible has her birth as 18th December, no year.[10] iii. Frank Henry King, birth registered in the quarter ending 6/1849, registered at Hackney, London.[2,7] The Eastes bible gives the birth place as Kingsland,[2] presumably born at the family residence, 2 De Beauvoir Road, Kingsland, West Hackney, London.[12,13] Died Jan-March quarter, 1850, registered in the Hackney district.[14] iv. Arthur Edward King, born 1853,[13] birth registered in the quarter ending 3/1853, registered at Hackney, London,[2,7] presumably born at the family residence, 2 De Beauvoir Road, Kingsland.[12,13] Emigrated to NSW, Australia.[2] Did not marry. Died 1884, Redfern, Sydney, Australia.[9] v. Clara Maria King was born 18/12/1841 (see above) in Kingsland or Shoreditch, London.[1-3] Latter lived at Southgate, London.[2] Emigrated to Sydney, Australia with husband and child on board the Lusitania as "second saloon" passengers; departed London 19/5/1879, arrived Sydney 11/7/1879.[2,4] Died 19/12/1896 at 19 Argyle St, Parramatta, NSW.[1,2,5] Buried at Mays Hill Cemetery, Sydney,[5,6] Section B, Row 4, No.14. Inscription reads "Sacred to the memory of my dear mother, Clara Maria Tosh, died December 19th 1896, aged 52 years". [7] According to the burial records, she was 49 years and died on the 18th.[7] Neither figure agrees with her birth as listed in the English BDM's.[3] The grave is in the Presbyterian section and it's description is as follows: "White marble agee headstone on sandstone plinth (5ft x 2ft 6ins x 4ins). Crockets outline the arch. Decorated with roses, daises and forget-me-nots in a circular nitch at centre top. Two urns flank headstone. In a family plot surrounded by a cast iron rope fence (1ft 5ins x 7ft 6ins sq) set in s/s kerb (8ft sq). No's 115, 118. Mason: R. Clark, Rookwood."[7] Clara married James Tosh 27/12/1875 at St Johns, Hackney, London.[1,2] James, an architect, was born 7/12/1850 at Otley, near Leeds, Yorkshire[2,3] and died 8/1/1918.[2,8] Children of Clara Maria King and James Tosh: * i. Harold Freeman Tosh was born 5/1/1877 at "Rose Cottage", Tile Kiln Lane, Edmonton, London.[1-5,14] Emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1879 on the Lusitania with his parents (see above).[6] Was employed at the Parramatta post-office for 20 years and latter at the Sydney G.P.O. until his retirement.[13,14] Was a member of the Loyal Fountain of Friendship Lodge, Parramatta, and the Parramatta branch of the Oddfellows Lodge.[13] Died 11/4/1931, "Otley", Argyle St, Parramatta, NSW and buried at St Bartholomew's, Prospect, NSW.[2,5,7,13] Married Florence Emily Neeves 22/4/1903 at St John's C/E, Parramatta,[2,5,10,14] by Rev. John A. Cooper,[12,14] witnesses were John Ruston & Edie Neeves.[14] Florence was born 5/1/1879 at Prospect, NSW, and died 22/4/1938.[2,7,8] Florence and Harold and both buried at St Bartholomew's, Prospect.[7] At the time of their marriage, Florence was living at Granville Heights and Harold at Parramatta.[10,14] After their marriage, they lived at "Otley", Argyle St, Parramatta, which was designed and built by James Tosh and which remained in the family until the 1970's when it was demolished.[5] Children of Harold Freeman Tosh & Florence Emily Neeves: * i. Rosemary Claire Ross Robinson, born 16th December, 1933 at Parramatta. Married Lionel James Sylvester 4th February, 1956 at St John's C/E, Parramatta. Lionel was born 1931. Children: Jennifer Eileen (1957), Peter Ross (1960), Suzanna Claire (1963) & James Alan (1967), all of Parramatta. After marriage they lived at Marayong, moving to the Jervis Bay area on the NSW south coast in the late 1980's.
